Students across the nation are given the yearly opportunity by the Veterans of Foreign Wars to apply for a scholarship by presenting their thoughts on democracy. Twnety-one students from around southern Illinois were recognized Jan. 6 during the 15th District VFW Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen Banquet. Established in 1947, the Voice of Democracy audio-essay program provides high school students the opportunity to express themselves in regards to a democratic and patriotic-themed recorded essay. This year’s theme was “What Are the Greatest Attributes of Our Democracy?” Thirteen high school students were named Voice of Democracy essay champions, while eight sixth- through eighth-graders were named Patriot’s Pen essay champions wrting on the theme “How Are You Inspried by America?” Among the Voice of Democracy essay champions were Massac County High School senior LivAdiva Lindquist, of Metropolis, who was sponsored by Creal Springs Memorial Post #9763; and Vienna High School students Sara Grace Beggs, who was sponsored by the Creal Springs post; Hannah Lauderdale, who was sponsored by Beggs-Gurley Post #5222 in Vienna; and Damien C. Roberts, who was sponsored by the Lusk Memorial Post #9227 in Golconda.
