The world of young adult film adaptations is no stranger to plot twists, both on and off the screen. Yet, few stories have taken as many unexpected turns as Veronica Roth’s Divergent series. From its promising start in 2014, the series quickly secured its spot among young adult blockbusters, but as the story unfolded, so did the unforeseen challenges.
When the third film, Allegiant, landed in theaters in 2016, it didn’t quite capture the magic everyone had hoped for. This hiccup in the series’ trajectory led to whispers and speculations about the fate of its final chapter.
Although many believed Lionsgate was considering a TV film adaptation for Starz, a recent revelation, courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter, has added another unknown layer to the story: Netflix had once shown interest in bringing Ascendant, the series’ climax, to life.
So, what led to this need for a potential rescue mission for the finale? Erik Feig, one of the producers, hinted that while other young adult adaptations like Twilight and The Hunger Games had split their final books for creative reasons, Divergent had different ambitions.
For the Divergent series, there were additional factors that led to the decision to split it into two. And I don’t know that it served the creative quite as well as it could have.
Sadly, fans were simply left wondering what Ascendant might have looked like. The cancelled fourth film was set to continue the journey of Tris and her companions, picking up where Allegiant left off.
Surprisingly, when Roth was asked about the divergence (pun intended) of the live-action adaptation from her books, she expressed contentment with this trajectory, stating:
I think I always felt peace about it just because I knew the movies were taking a different track than the books, and if you change the lead up, you change the ending. So, I kind of felt like at that point … I feel like that third movie, I don’t know — there’s a lot we could talk about with it. But it’s its own thing.
The 2010s marked a huge shift in the realm of young adult cinema. With films like The Maze Runner, Hunger Games, The Fault in Our Stars, and Twilight, Hollywood went all out, tapping into the burgeoning young adult literature. While some franchises struggled to find their footing, others, such as the Divergent series, made a lasting impact, burning brightly but fading away just as quickly.
