News Flash • Centennial Art and Essay Contest – City of University Park

Calling all young writers and artists – help us celebrate University Park's past and our bright future that lies ahead by entering the Centennial art and/or essay contest! The art contest is open to all students in grades K-12 that reside in University Park or HPISD, and the essay contest is open to students in grades 4-12 that reside in University Park or HPISD. Choose from one of three prompts, and submit your original work to centennial@uptexas.org or in person at UP Public Library during regular business hours. The prompts and more details about the contests can be found below.
We are now accepting submissions for both contests, and the submission deadline is Friday, March 8, 2024. Winners of each grade category will be notified on Friday, March 29 and first place winners will be recognized during the Centennial Celebration on Saturday, April 13.
Option 1: Depict the City of University Park as you think it looked in the year 1924, 100 years ago.
Option 2: Depict the City of University Park as you think it will look in the year 2124.
Option 3: Create a visual presentation of what makes the City of University Park unique or a special place.
Eligibility
The contest is open to all children Grades K-12 who are residents of City of University Park or attend a Highland Park ISD School.
Requirements
Submitting Entries
The UP Centennial Art Contest submission period begins January 1, 2024 and concludes on March 8, 2024. Entries must be delivered during regular business hours to UP Public Library by March 8, 2024. All artwork should include a label on the back of artwork with the artist’s name. Artwork may not be signed on the front as judging will be anonymous. Criteria
Entries will be evaluated based on grade-appropriate originality, interpretation of stated theme, creative techniques, composition, and overall art appearance.
Judging
A committee of University Park residents will select the top submissions from each grade category. All artwork will be evaluated anonymously until the winners have been announced. Judges will make selections based on the above-mentioned criteria to determine which pieces will be awarded 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in each grade category.
Option 1: On April 12th, 1924, just a couple of years after Southern Methodist University opened, officials signed a charter creating the City of University Park. What was life like in University Park during this time period? Essay can be either a work of fiction or a historically referenced, non-fiction account of everyday life at the time. For example, it could be written in the form of a fictional diary/memoir from that period and feature fictional families, or it could be a non-fiction account involving research of a real family or event.
Option 2: The year is 2124. The City of University Park is celebrating its 200-year anniversary. What will life be like during this bicentennial year?
Option 3: Describe what makes the City of University Park unique or a special place.
